LITERATURHAUS FREIBURG
Sivan Ben Yishai and Ivna Žic

CANCELED: Sivan Ben Yishai: Vertrauen in das Wort // A talk about war and language

Thu 06/13/24 | 7:30 pm Tickets

The reading unfortunately has to be postponed, the new event date will be announced in September on www.literaturhaus-freiburg.de.

What has changed since the terrorist attack on October 7th, 2023: the language, the deeds, the images, our perception? Sivan Ben Yishai, one of the most important playwrights of our time, writes, reads, acts and thinks, multilingual and multi-perspective, while a terrible escalation of violence takes place in the Middle East. In her essay "Vertrauen in das Wort" (Theater heute, February 2024), she questions the "space between those who die and those who debate". How can a human gaze be preserved in all the cracks? How is language itself wounded by the events? And how do a terrorist attack and a war fit into a conversation, into a text?

In an exchange with the author Ivna Žic, Ben Yishai attempts to view the Israeli-Palestinian present and the current discourse in Germany from a polyphonic perspective. Along selected readings, literature opens up a space of freedom, of interpersonal stories, of gray areas and contradictions, of hope and trust.

An event by

Literaturhaus Freiburg in cooperation with the festival Performing Democracy – an event of the Literatursommer 2024 of the Baden-Württemberg-Stiftung with the kind support of the INTA-Stiftung and the Förderkreis Literaturhaus Freiburg.
