Dakh Daughters

Democracy and resistance

Tue 06/11/2024 | 7:30–9:00 pm Tickets

The concert will be held in Ukrainian with German surtitles.

Their performance on Maidan Square in 2014 made them a cult act in Ukraine, since the Russian invasion they have been living in exile. The Dakh Daughters stand for a quirky and peotic mix, a "freak cabaret" of Ukrainian folklore, punk, cabaret, prog rock and classical music in several languages. Their show UKRAINE FIRE also delights with phantasmagorical to highly realistic video projections. It is an exploding live orchestra between rage and healing. The show is an act of resistance, a great musical poem that bears witness to the invasion, the crimes, the humanitarian catastrophe and at the same time ignites the flame of hope.

The Dakh Daughters were initially students of Vlad Troitsky at the Kiev Conservatory. They later joined the Dakh Theatre to continue the experience of creative and activist exchange that characterizes the work of this ensemble, which is so important for the Ukrainian scene. They are actresses, musicians and singers and present an energetic performance with a political and feminist message to the audience in the Großes Haus of the Theater Freiburg.

"There are six of them and they look like they've stepped straight out of Tim Burton's universe. They offer us a floating moment in which they brilliantly let the strings get out of sync. They intertwine their repertoire, which is reminiscent of crazy fairy tales, with stories about the war in Ukraine. Magnificent."
