In Mexico, “Pagadores” are people who are falsely accused of human trafficking by a chronically overwhelmed government in order to demonstrate “successes” in apprehending criminals to the public. A young mother recounts how she was abducted and imprisoned and eventually embarked on the 2,000-kilometer journey back to her son. Only her voice guides us through the film. She herself is never seen on screen. The images of the journey from northern to southern Mexico accompany her story and leave room for the viewer’s imagination. Miriam’s story is interrupted by the Adelas. Coming from a circus family, she occasionally performs as a clown. In this setting in front of the camera, she recounts her life, which fell apart when her teenage daughter was abducted and disappeared ten years ago. An intense and moving film that separates image and narrative yet artfully intertwines them.
