Über Leben im Anthropozän – Demokratie im Feuer

Lecture in the series “Life in the Anthropocene”

Fri, May 8, 2026 | 5:00–6:30 p.m. | THEATER FREIBURG Winterer Foyer

It is now a widely documented finding that, alongside other central achievements of modernity, democratic forms of society are also at risk in the Anthropocene. In his book “Democracy on Fire”, DER SPIEGEL-editor and author Jonas Schaible focuses primarily on the relationship between democracy and climate change. In response to the fear that democracies, with their cumbersome procedures and notorious short-sightedness, are incapable of addressing long-term global phenomena such as climate change, he passionately advocates for the perspective of democracy. With one important clarification: “Democracy can only be preserved if we protect the climate. The climate, on the other hand, can only be protected democratically. But democracy in times of climate crisis must be able to look different than before.” His lecture will elaborate on this and open it up for discussion.

An event organized by the Katholische Akademie Freiburg in collaboration with the Günter Anders Research Center at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, the Studium Generale at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, and Theater Freiburg.
