The Pale Baron
A thought-provoking and entertaining musical theater performance. Poetic and touching – not only for a young audience.
The Pale Baron is the mighty ruler of the underwater state. He takes the last bite without hesitation, even though nobody else gets anything. Nobody is allowed to contradict him because he is always right; he is able of everything and knows everything. What he cannot stand at all: poets. They concern him the most because poets hide anything and everything between the lines, which could be dangerous for the Pale Baron. Questions worry him, too, which is why they are strictly forbidden. But children ask questions — lots of them. For example: Why is the sea level rising, and what is the Pale Baron doing about it? And why and where have all the poets disappeared to from one day to another? The musicians Felka and Felix are preoccupied by these questions, too. With their small, revolutionary sing-along show, the duo tours secretly. A plea for art, poetry, friendship and freedom – in an authoritarian state that hunts down anyone who is different, who asks questions and who defies the dictates of utility.
Workshops for school classes to accompany the performance visit can be booked at theatervermittlung@marienbad.org
The performance will be in German.

“In their musical tale, Anna Vercammen and Joeri Cnapelinckx show what it means to live under a dictatorship that persecutes migrants, denies climate change, curtails freedom of expression and artistic freedom, and in which an autocrat places his own personal interests above everything and everyone. Without preaching, but with lightness and empathy, Der Bleiche Baron tells of the power of words, friendship and solidarity, and of coming together.” – the curators
